We could probably call this the Grandfather of all bike tours in China, this ever popular routing has been going for over 20 years now and still holds all of the marvelous scenery and charm of a rural China that seems to be stopped in time. The end destinations of Yangshuo captivate us with their incredible Karst formations along Li River as well the myriad of valleys in between. See fishermen on the river using the Cormorant bird to get their catch. Cycling and accommodations in the midst of this, the largest of “hobbit lands” on earth! The beginning and end of this tour also gives us a glimpse of the vibrant South China city called Guangzhou with an eye opening look at Cantonese Culture and Cuisine!

Yunnan Province is arguably one of China's most breathtaking, geographically diverse and culturally fascinating regions. To enable you to get up close to its colourful ethnic minorities and rare natural environments, we have designed a world class cycling adventure like no other. From the provincial capital of Kunming we travel to the World Heritage town of Lijiang and begin with a warm up ride around Lashi Lake to experience rural life of the Naxi people. Taking the backroads out of Lijiang with the snow capped peaks of Jade Dragon mountain as our backdrop, we cycle to the water terraces of Bai Shui He and the tiny town of Da Ju on the banks of the Yangtze River. Crossing by ferry we hike through Tiger Leaping Gorge staying in small local guesthouses along the trail. Back on the bikes and its one magic moment after the next with the first bend in the Yangtze River at Shigu, hot springs of Eryuan, ancient bridges of Shaxi and finally the beautiful cobble stone streets of Dali where we complete our cycling odyssey.

Vietnam is becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia. The curiosity of this country, closed for so many years is getting the best of us! We start our cycling in South China from Nanning, the Captial of Guangxi Province. Guangxi Province borders Vietnam and we will cycle right across it. This in itself is remarkable considering that just years ago there was a full fledged border war going on! These two nations have made their peace and active border trade is now going on. We stay mostly in the North of Vietnam and one of the highlights is certainly Ha Long Bay. The most memorable, however, will be the friendliness of the Vietnamese people and their gentle way of life.

This tour will start with our usual acclimatizing, culturally and physically, in Lhasa and then gradually take in the spectacular passes and glaciers of Central Tibet. From a relatively lush Lhasa valley we will go over the Kampala (4,800m) and the Karola (5,100m) passes and enjoy cycling along Lake Yandrok in between. Yamdrok Lake is one of Tibet’s largest and highest at 4,200m and over 50 km in length. The Karola Glacier will leave us awe struck as it literally seems to be falling on us when we go down Karola pass entering southern Tibet. Cycling to Xigatse we will have a geographic change of high canyon walls and very dry country with plenty of climbs left. The end of this tour takes in some of Tibet’s history present and past with the Gyantse Fort and the Tashilinpo Monastery – seat of the Panchen Lama. This trip we only offer in the summer and fall months of every year because of snow and weather conditions on the passes. Seasonality: May through September Tour Grade: Challenging Hotel Grades: See list Cycling Distance: 350-450km.

Starting from 500m in Chengdu, capitol of Sichuan Province with its lovely hot and seasoned food we will start cycling along the Min River. We will coach most of the way with some portions of cycling to the source of the Min River being the Huanglong and Jiuzhaigou National Parks. Getting to these two parks will be a slow process not just because of terrain of altitude but because of the numerous photo opportunities at every bend on the road. Huanglong or “Yellow Dragon” is the “Yellowstone” of China with its unreal mineral pools shadowed under the 6,000m high Precious Snow Mtn. Jiuzhaigou Nat’l Park is set in a forested area brimming with myriad’s of small lakes and thousands of fish. Beautiful lake reflections, unreal colors and waterfalls will keep us enthralled as we make our way cycling through the park. Next it is a climb to the Tibetan Nomads and their herds of yaks. This is where we will use our tents as up on these grassland there are seldom settlements of any great size. Going on into Gansu Province we will get into some rolling hill country with still the ever present abundance and variety of high tundra flowers, eagles and gerbils. In the midst of our ride through Gansu we will get a taste of Tibetan Buddhism at Xiahe – one of the largest operating monasteries outside of Tibet with it’s seven colleges. Next it’s on to Qinghai Province and some major geographical changes! From the top of the mountain pass separating Gansu and Qinghai we will start with a swift descent into a valley of red rock similar to the state of Arizona in the USA. We meet up with the beginnings of the Yellow River and the through hilly country to Xining, the capitol of Qinghai Province. We end our trip with cycling to and from Qinghai Lake – China’s largest freshwater lake and two nights on its shores with the many Tibetan herders who summer there.

Believe it or not! Legend records that the Yao Kingdom was challenged by a superior army in days of old. To meet the challenge, the King offered one of his three daughters and half his kingdom to the brave man who would meet the challenge. No one responded. Finally one day his favorite dog began to speak up! The dog went on to defeat the enemy. He told the King he did not care about half the Kingdom he only wanted his daughter as his just reward. Reluctantly, the King kept his promise and the third daughter was chosen by the dog. It was soon found that this dog could transform into a man at night time. The King then requested the dog to change into a man permanently. The dog agreed but told them that the only way would necessitate them putting him in a steaming wok for 49 days and to never uncover the wok during the period. It was agreed. The dog was steamed but by the 6 th week his young bride could handle the suspense no longer and she opened the wok. The dog jumped out of the wok and transformed into a man with dog ears and hairy legs. His young bride was so sorry for her impatience. To this day this is the reason the Yao people wrap their heads with scarves and cover their legs!
