Yunnan Adventure

Day 1: Arrive Kunming

Arrive at any time during the day and make your way to the hotel. An evening group meeting is planned followed by an optional dinner.

Day 2: Dali

Early morning walking tour of Kunming before departing by bus to visit the Bai people of Dali.

Day 3: Dali

After a morning orientation tour of old Dali town free time to explore Cangshan Mountain or Erhai Lake.

Day 4: Lijiang

Public transfer to the Naxi town of Lijiang where the afternoon is free to wander the old town at your leisure.

Day 5: Lijiang

Spend the day walking the old town, Black Dragon Pool Park or head up to Lion Hill for the amazing views.

Day 6: Zhongdian (Shangri-la)

Drive to the Tibetan village of Zhongdian and experience China’s contrasting cultures with a visit to the local monasteries.

Day 7: Tiger Leaping Gorge

Bus to Tiger Leaping Gorge and start trekking for a half day taking in the spectacular scenery.

Day 8: Tiger Leaping Gorge / Sleeper Train

Trek out of the gorge and drive back to Lijiang by local bus before settling in for sleeper train back to Kunming.

Day 9: Depart

In the morning upon arrival in Kunming you are free to depart.

Day 1 Kunming
Nihao! Welcome to Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan province!Your tour begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. and there will be more information about the meeting when you arrive at the hotel. Please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask at reception. Your group meeting will include details about your trip, followed by an orientation walk and optional dinner at a local restaurant. If you arrive early, you may go for a walk around this pleasant 'Eternal Spring City, famed for its temperate nature. Check out The Loft, an area west of the city center used to be a factory, now home to many small galleries and cafes. You may also visit Yuantong Temple, the grandest Buddhist temple in Yunnan province.

Day 2 Kunming-Dali
This morning we will enjoy a walking tour of the Green Lake Park. It was established early in the 17th century on the west side of the Wuhua Mountain. There are hundreds of species of trees and plants, as well as numerous birds and waterfowl. Then we will visit Flowers and Birds Market, where you will find various types of birds, flowers, antiques, jewelry, and handmade crafts, we will end our walking tour at Neyer's Former Residence. Nieer was the composer for March of the Volunteers, the national anthem of the People's Republic of China. After the tour, we will back to the hotel then head to the bus station.We will take the public bus to Dali Old Town.

Day 3 Dali
Today you will take a guided walk around Dali old town with your leader. Present-day Dali is a city that combines history with modern convenience. It divided into two areas: the Ancient City and the New District (widely known as Xiaguan). After the tour, enjoy a free afternoon exploring the famed Cangshan and Erhai. Perhaps take the cable car up Cangshan Mountain or stop in at the Three Pagodas or hire a bike to Erhai Lake.

Day 4 Dali-Lijiang
Early morning we will take public bus to Lijiang (approx. 4 hours).The Old Town of Lijiang located on the Lijiang plain at an elevation of 2,400 meters in southwest Yunnan, China, where a series of strategic passes give access to the surrounding mountains. The Yulong Snow Mount to the north-west is the source of the rivers and springs which water the plain and supply the Heilong Pool (Black Dragon Pond), from where waterways feed into a network of canals and channels to provide the town. The Old Town of Lijiang comprises three parts: Dayan Old Town (including the Black Dragon Pond), Baisha and Shuhe housing clusters.This afternoon we will take an orientation walk of this fantastic old town.

Day 5 Lijiang
Today we will continue to explore this old town. We will visit Black Dragon Pool and Lion Hill Park.Black Dragon Pool is a famous pond in the scenic Jade Spring Park (Yu Quan Gong Yuan) located at the foot of Elephant Hill.It was built in 1737 during the Qing dynasty and offers a spectacular view of the region's tallest mountain, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, over its white marble bridge.Lion Hill Park located in the center of the old town, the Lion Hill Park is a nationally rated attraction. The park was built against the hill, resembling a lion lying sleeping, hence its name. The ancient buildings in the park are in the best position to enjoy a bird's view of Lijiang's old town.

Day 6 Lijiang-Shangri-La
We will travel by public bus to Zhongdian, the most significant and best-preserved Tibetan residential cluster in China. We will visit Songzanlin Monastery today.Songzanlin Monastery is the most significant Tibetan Buddhism monastery in Yunnan Province. It located on a mountain slope 5km from the county town of Shangri-La. Since the 5th Dalai Lama chose the site through divination in 1679, the monastery has grown into the most important community of its kind in Yunnan.

Day 7 Shangri-La/Tiger Leaping Gorge
The early morning we will take a public bus to Qiaotou, the starting point for your trek through the Tiger Leaping Gorge. Gingerly stepping along a trail swept with scree to allow an old fellow with a donkey to pass; resting atop a rock, exhausted, looking up to see the fading sunlight dance between snow-shrouded peaks, then down to see the lingering rays dancing on the rippling waters a thousand meters away; feeling utterly exhilarated. That pretty much sums up Tiger Leaping Gorge, the unmissable trek of southwest China.

Day 8 Tiger Leaping Gorge/Lijiang
This morning’s trekking starts with a nice, smooth flat section that has spectacular views. There are only a few uphill battles and one last downhill stretch which is long and slippery. After the half-day trek, we return to Qiaotou, take a public bus back to Lijiang train station. Then we will board an overnight train to Kunming.

Day 9 Kunming-Depart
Arrival Kunming in the morning. There are no activities planned for today, and you can depart at any time.

Visas - A visa is required for entry into China for all nationalities except Japan, Singapore and Brunei who are allowed visa free stays under 14 days. Travellers holding APEC cards are allowed entrance visa free if their card has already been approved for China.

Under the current guidelines to get a visa you will need to provide the following:

- Letter of Invitation from a Chinese agency

- Copy of Flight tickets

- Hotel booking confirmation

- Travel Insurance (some embassies ask for this document) 

In some cases, you may be required to provide further information or documentation and if this is the case we will notify you as soon as possible.

Booking a Single Room - On this particular tour we are pleased to be able to offer travellers the option of pre-booking a guaranteed single room. Due to the variety of accommodation used on this tour, single rooms are available for a majority of the nightstops, however it would still mean sharing on any overnight trains. All of our tours are planned and operated on a twin-share basis, meaning that the standard cost is based either on individual travellers sharing accommodation with another group member of the same sex, or people who book together sharing accommodation.

Vaccinations and Your Health - We recommend that you contact your primary care physician or a travel doctor for advice on vaccinations and travel health and we advise that you check to see if your tetanus-diphtheria booster is still valid every 10 years. 

Insurance - Travel insurance is compulsory for all our customers. At the start of the trip you must provide us with: the name of your insurance company, your policy number, a 24 hour medical emergency contact number, and the expiry date of the policy. You should ensure that your policy covers you for medical expenses and repatriation. If you are unable to provide all this information at the start of the trip you will not be allowed to join the trip. You can purchase insurance easily online by checking our Travel Insurance page.

Luggage - One main piece of lockable baggage and a shoulder bag. Total allowance: 44lbs/20kgs. Remember, you are expected to carry your own baggage – so don’t overload yourself. It is essential that your baggage is lockable; the airline/train authorities insist on this. Please be aware, before boarding a flight in China that the Chinese authorities will only allow bottles onto aircraft if they have been checked in as main luggage. Any bottles in the hand luggage may be confiscated.
